(Video Poster 12) Complex Presentation of a Duplicated Urethra

Objectives: This study aims to learn about a rare presentation of a duplicated urethra. The presentation will educate viewers regarding the classification of duplicated urethras and embryologic origin. The video will also discuss the surgical management of an incomplete (type I) duplicated urethra who presented with recurrent labial abscesses previously.

Methods: A 30 year old patient was referred to urology for urinary symptoms. Her history was notable for history of recurrent right labial abscesses and history of prior cloacal defect status post surgical repair as a child. MRI imaging found a 4 cm incomplete duplicated urethra. An exam under anesthesia was performed to confirm these findings and for surgical planning. She consequently underwent robotic-assisted excision of the duplicated urethra. Her post-operative course was notable for a right labial abscess requiring incision and drainage in the operating room.

Clinical Relevance: Albeit duplicated urethras are rare in a female population, knowledge of such anomalies is imperative for urogynecologists. In patients with a history of prior urogenital or cloacal defects, further work-up should include MRI imaging and/or exam under anesthesia if a patient's history is suspicious.
