(Video Poster 26) Urethral Polypectomy

Objectives: This video aims to provide an educational resource on the surgical excision of urethral polyps in female patients, a rare and often under-recognized condition. The primary objective is to demonstrate the safety and efficacy of urethral polypectomy in treating these lesions.

Methods: The video presents a step-by-step surgical approach to performing a urethral polypectomy in a patient with a prolapsing urethral polyp. A diagnostic cystoscopy is conducted to evaluate the urethra and adjacent tissues, followed by a labial biopsy to assess any possible underlying pathological changes. Key technical aspects include identification of the polyp base, attention to meticulous hemostasis, post-operative catheterization. Finally, we discuss the histopathological findings of condyloma acuminatum and the rarity of this finding in female urethras.

Clinical Relevance: Urethral polyps in females are a rare but significant clinical finding that can present with a variety of symptoms, including dysuria, split urine stream, and hematuria. Early diagnosis and intervention are critical in preventing complications. Surgical excision of these polyps can be performed expeditiously under sedation. This video aims to provide guidance regarding the surgical approach and raise awareness about the potentially more rare pathologies associated with urethral polyps.
