Dr. Sara Wood is originally from small-town Iowa and earned her undergraduate degree in Biology and Biochemistry from the University of Northern Iowa. She completed medical school at the University of Iowa, followed by residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology and a fellowship in Female Pelvic Medcine & Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery at Mercy Hospital in St. Louis.
Dr. Wood also holds a Master’s degree in Health Professions Education from the University of Illinois at Chicago, where her scholarly work focused on surgical curriculum development and training in operative error. During her time at Mercy Hospital, she served as both Associate Program Director and Program Director for the OBGYN residency program.
In October 2023, Dr. Wood was recruited to Washington University in St. Louis to serve as Division Chief of Urogynecology and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery. Since then, she has led the Division through significant clinical and educational expansion, increasing both access to care and training opportunities for fellowship learners.
Nationally, Dr. Wood has held leadership roles with ACOG, guiding Junior Fellows; with the Society for Gynecologic Surgeons, advancing competency-based surgical education; and with CREOG, serving as faculty for the Program Director School. She is also a member of the ACGME’s Residency Review Committee for Obstetrics and Gynecology.
Dr. Wood’s career is defined by her dedication to delivering exceptional surgical care for women with pelvic floor disorders and her passion for education and mentorship. She remains deeply committed to empowering students, residents, fellows, and colleagues to reach their full potential and improve others lives through medicine.
